Imagine this scenario. You leave the house for work all bright and chirpy Monday morning, you walk into the office still chirpy but you notice that your colleague is wiping off tears and trying to appear fine. Like any normal person, you’ll ask what’s up and then he launches into what happened. He tells you how his mum that brought him up all by herself finally succumbed to cancer right in his arms, and as he’s telling you all these, the tears fall and you can see that he is really grieving.
I can tell you this for a fact, your bright and chirpy mood would start going downhill; grief would overwhelm you and you might shed a tear or two. This is simply because someone you like is in pain.
Emotions can overwhelm us, most of the time we just fall into an emotion and we start trying to either stop the feeling or ride the wave. It turns out that we can trick ourselves into feeling a particular emotion. One of the top ways to trick ourselves is to keep company with someone that’s currently experiencing that emotion. The effect of this on our life is that when we constantly connect with God on an emotional level, His thoughts (and emotions) rub off on us and our lives would become just like Christ when He said that;
So Jesus explained himself at length. “I’m telling you this straight. The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing. John 5:19-20(MSG)
Emotions can be transferred. How does this apply to our relationship with God? You see, God has emotions too and this can be seen in the Bible; when you spend time with God, He rubs off on you. There is verse that I love that says
“The Lord your God is in the midst of you, He will rejoice over you with singing”
Can you beat that? God has the full range of emotions, we are created in His image. I also discovered that our emotions can influence our thoughts without any conscious input from us.
What I’ve learnt so far is that when your emotions are aroused during worship and prayer and you connect with God; your mind becomes flooded with thoughts from God. So, how do you connect with God emotionally when praying; here are 3 ways that I recently started practicing to connect with God on an emotional level;
- Worship God just because. Sometimes we feel God has not been good to us, we feel that we’ve prayed and prayed but He just seems far away. The truth is that God is good and He has created everything in this world to aid and help you in fulfilling your purpose on the earth. When you feel this way, you’ve got to worship Him just because. The best way to do this (or the way I do this) is to look to nature, look at all that God has created; you can take a cue from the songwriter who said “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the works thine hands hath made.” I particularly enjoy watching National Geographic Wild; everything that God has created is totally awesome and once you start appreciating the works of God, you begin to see His hand at work in you and you will be filled with awe.
- Listen (or study) the book of Psalms. This particular book of the Bible is interesting because it is filled with heartfelt dialogue with God, authentic discussions with God. When my prayers are inspired by the psalms, I find the exercise to be cathartic, that’s because you get to surf on the emotions whether positive or negative and most times by the time the prayer is done – wow! peace.
- Listen to godly music. Music has surprising benefits; music has the ability to change our brain and mood by engaging our emotions, helping with memory, aids learning and neuroplasticity, stress management and alleviation of pain. Now, imagine combining using music as a means of communicating with God; your brain is at work, your heart is connecting with God. Words of love for God would begin to flow.
God is interested in you as a person, the Bible tells us that He is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Today, I charge you to pick up the challenge of being authentic with God; tell Him how you feel, pour your love on Him and release your frustrations in prayer. God is always available. Reach out to Him today.
