Death is universal, different cultures and religions have developed ways to cope with death and there are various theories as to what happens when an individual has passed on. Life is wonderful and death always feels like an insult, and even when a very old person dies, it still feels as if they should be with us. The fear of death is real because there really is no scientific fact about what happens after death.
The older we get, the more our mortality stares us in the face and some of us start fearing death. I used to be one of the people that feared death; this fear consumed me so much that it affected the way I lived my life. Growing up in an environment filled with the guilt of sin, my fear was really about going to hell because I was always conscious of my sins.
As Christians, we need not fear death in any form. We are comforted in the Bible that death has been destroyed because as children of God, death is just a translation in which we put off this physical body. Death brings Christians into another level in our relationship with God.
Fear has torment. The more we give in to fear, the more tortured we become. We need to live this life to the fullest because no moment can ever be recovered, and what tales would we tell after death if we spend this entire time shrinking from life because of fear of what comes after death.
Here are 3 ways, from a Christian worldview, to help conquer the fear of death.
Death is an inevitable part of life
Sometimes it seems that life is about rushing to the grave and we live as such. The truth is that no one will live on earth forever. Death was introduced as a natural consequence of the disobedience of Adam and has been reigning on earth since then. It is time to move on. Everyone will die.
Life is to be lived. Take responsibility for your life.
Go bungee jumping (if you want to). Carve out time for the important people in your life. There is more to life than waking up and working all day. We need to pursue a purpose greater than yourself so as to leave a legacy on earth, do what fulfils you. YOLO (You Only Live Once) is true folks and when channelled positively, fear dissipates.
Embrace the love of God
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
God would never go back on His Word and this is what seals the deal for us. We have no reason to be afraid because the love of God casts out fear, there is no fear in love. When we fully embrace the love of God, there is no cause to fear death or anything else for that matter.
Eternal life is in Jesus Christ, and accepting Him is the only way for us to truly overcome death.
At the end of the day, there is nothing we can do to avoid death; the option we have is to live life to the fullest while embracing the love of God completely.
